St. Nicholas – December 6

St. Nicholas was a kind and caring man who lived a long time ago in a place called Myra. He became a bishop, which means he was a leader in the church. People loved him because he was very generous and always helped those in need. One famous story tells how he secretly gave bags of gold to a poor family so their daughters could have a better life.

Because of his kindness, people started celebrating him on December 6, his feast day. Over many years, stories about St. Nicholas grew and changed, and he became the inspiration for Santa Claus! Today, when we think about giving gifts and helping others, we are following the example of St. Nicholas.

Here are some fun, kid-friendly activities to celebrate St. Nicholas Day:

1. Kindness Challenge

  • Activity: “Kindness Card” template provided (e.g., help a friend, share a smile, write a thank-you note).
  • Goal: Complete all acts by the end of the day to honor St. Nicholas’ generosity.

2. St. Nicholas Shoe Surprise

  • Activity: Decorate a paper shoe or stocking. At the end of the day, place a small treat (like a candy cane or sticker) inside, just like the tradition of St. Nicholas leaving gifts in shoes.

3. Story Time & Discussion

  • Activity: Read a short, kid-friendly story about St. Nicholas.
  • Discussion Question: “What can we do to be generous like St. Nicholas?”

4. Giving Tree

  • Activity: Create a “Giving Tree”. Write one way you can help others on a paper ornament and hang it on the tree.

5. Art & Craft

  • Activity: Make a St. Nicholas hat (bishop’s miter) using construction paper and decorate it with bright colors.
  • Extension: Child can wear their hats during the Christmas Break.

6. Letter of Thanks

Activity: Write a thank-you letter to someone who has shown kindness to them, connecting to St. Nicholas’ spirit of gratitude.
