Family Activities to Celebrate St. John Paul II

St. John Paul II was born in Poland in 1920 and became pope in 1978, serving until 2005. He was known for his deep spirituality, love for young people, and efforts to promote peace and human dignity around the world. He played a key role in the fall of communism in Eastern Europe and was a tireless advocate for the sanctity of life and the importance of family. He was canonized in 2014 and is the patron saint of youth and families.

To Celebrate St. John Paul II

1. Create a “Be Not Afraid” Poster

  • St. John Paul II often said, “Be not afraid.” Have children design posters with this quote and decorate them with symbols of hope and faith.

2. Watch a Short Documentary or Video

  • Find a child-friendly video or documentary about his life and discuss what made him a great leader and saint.

3. Polish-Inspired Dinner Night

  • Celebrate his heritage with a Polish-themed dinner. Try pierogi, kielbasa, or apple cake. Let kids help prepare the meal.

4. Prayer Time

  • Say a special prayer together asking for St. John Paul II’s intercession for your family, especially for peace and unity.

5. Family Journal Activity

  • Reflect on the question: “What does it mean to live with courage and faith?” Write or draw responses in a family journal.

6. Visit a Church or Shrine

  • If possible, visit a local church or shrine named after him, or light a candle in his honor.
