Lenten Activities for Families

1. Family Prayers:

  • Daily Lenten Devotions: Set aside time each day for family prayer, focusing on Lenten themes such as repentance, forgiveness, and renewal.
  • Stations of the Cross: Pray the Stations of the Cross together, reflecting on each station and its significance.
  • Lenten Prayer Jar: Create a jar filled with prayer intentions. Each day, draw one and pray for that intention as a family.

2. Fasting:

  • Simplified Meals: Choose one day a week to have a simple meal, such as soup and bread, to remind the family of the sacrifices made during Lent.
  • Screen-Free Time: Dedicate certain hours or days to being screen-free, using the time for family bonding and spiritual activities.
  • Giving Up Treats: Encourage children to give up a favorite treat or activity and discuss the importance of sacrifice.

3. Almsgiving:

  • Charity Jar: Set up a jar where family members can contribute spare change. At the end of Lent, donate the collected money to a charity of the family’s choice.
  • Acts of Kindness Calendar: Create a calendar with daily acts of kindness that family members can perform, such as helping a neighbor or writing a thank-you note.
  • Volunteer Together: Find local volunteer opportunities where the whole family can serve, such as at a food bank or community center.

Additional Ideas:

  • Lenten Family Retreat: Plan a day or weekend retreat at home with activities like prayer, reflection, and discussions about the meaning of Lent.
  • Lenten Reading: Choose a spiritual book to read together as a family, discussing its themes and how they relate to Lent.
  • Crafts and Activities: Engage in Lenten-themed crafts, such as making a Lenten wreath or creating a Resurrection garden.

These activities can help families grow in faith and unity during the Lenten season, making it a meaningful and enriching time for everyone. 🕊️💜
