A Faith-Filled Thanksgiving for the Whole Family
As we celebrate Thanksgiving, we are reminded that every good gift comes from God and that gratitude is at the heart of our Catholic faith. This special season offers a wonderful opportunity for families to slow down, spend time together, and reflect on the many blessings God has provided throughout the year.
In this newsletter, you’ll find a collection of fun and meaningful Thanksgiving activities that encourage prayer, gratitude, service, and family connection. Whether you’re creating a gratitude tree, learning about inspiring saints, sharing blessings around the dinner table, or performing acts of kindness for others, these activities are designed to help families grow in faith while making lasting memories together.
May this Thanksgiving be a time of joyful celebration, thankful hearts, and a deeper appreciation for God’s abundant love. We wish you and your family a blessed and happy Thanksgiving!
Thanksgiving Gratitude Tree
What you’ll need: Construction paper, markers, scissors, and tape.
How to do it: Draw or create a tree on a wall or poster board. Cut out paper leaves. Each family member writes something they’re thankful for on a leaf. Before Thanksgiving dinner, gather around the tree and read the leaves aloud. End with a prayer thanking God for these blessings.
Catholic Connection: Reflect on God’s gifts and the virtue of gratitude.
Family Thanksgiving Prayer Jar
What you’ll need: A jar, slips of paper, and pens.
How to do it: Throughout the day, family members add prayer intentions and thanksgivings to the jar. At dinner or before bedtime, read several intentions together and pray for them.
Catholic Connection: Teaches intercessory prayer and thanksgiving.
Saints of Gratitude Scavenger Hunt
Create clues that lead to different rooms in the house. Include saints known for their gratitude and love of God, such as: St. Francis of Assisi, St. Thérèse of Lisieux, St. Teresa of Calcutta, and St. John Paul II. At each stop, share a short fact about the saint and how they showed gratitude.
Make Daily Bread Together
Bake bread, muffins, or rolls as a family. While baking: Read Matthew 6:11, “Give us this day our daily bread.” Discuss how God provides for our needs. Before eating, pray a blessing over the food.
Thanksgiving Rosary Walk
Take a family walk outdoors. For each decade of the Rosary: Thank God for family. Thank God for friends. Thank God for creation. Thank God for faith. Thank God for future blessings. This combines prayer, exercise, and appreciation for God’s creation.
Acts of Kindness Challenge
Create a list of simple service activities: Write thank-you notes. Deliver treats to neighbors. Call lonely relatives. Donate food to a parish food drive. Help with household chores. See how many acts your family can complete in one day.
Catholic Connection: Living out the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy.
Decorate a God’s Blessings Tablecloth
Use a paper tablecloth or large sheet of paper. Ask everyone to write: Favorite family memories, Bible verses, things they are grateful for, and small prayers. Use it as a centerpiece for your Thanksgiving meal.
Thanksgiving Gospel Reflection
Read one of these passages together: Luke 17:11-19 (The Ten Lepers), Psalm 100, or Colossians 3:15-17. Discuss: Why is gratitude important? What blessings have we received this year? How can we thank God through our actions?
Family Blessing Circle
Before dinner: Light a candle. Pass a cross, rosary, or small crucifix around the circle. Each person shares one blessing from the year and one hope for the future. End with the Our Father.
Bible Charades: Thankfulness Edition
Act out stories such as: Noah thanking God after the flood, The Feeding of the 5,000, The Wedding at Cana, The Ten Lepers, and David praising God. Family members guess the biblical story.
Blessings Around the World Activity
Choose several countries and learn how Catholics celebrate harvests and give thanks in different cultures. Then pray for families around the world who may be in need.
Letters to God
Have each family member write a letter beginning with: “Dear God, thank You for…” Include prayers, hopes, and thanksgivings. Save the letters and read them again next Thanksgiving to see how God has worked in your lives.
Closing Family Prayer
Heavenly Father, We thank You for the gift of our family, our faith, and the many blessings You have given us. Help us to recognize Your goodness every day and to share Your love with others. May our hearts always be filled with gratitude. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
