Elizabeth Wylie serves as the OAPCE Director for Hamilton while fulfilling her role as a mother of two students attending HWCDSB schools. Inspired by her desire to advocate for a Catholic educational environment that enables young people to flourish in all aspects of their lives, her focus is on building relationships between parents and educational stakeholders to ensure the best possible future opportunities for all students as they transition into adulthood. | 7:15 pm - 7:30 pm | Item III: Emotion Coaching Made Simple: A Practical Guide for Parents and Professionals. This brief presentation will focus on helping parents and professionals distinguish between emotions and behaviours, recognizing that behaviours are often communication. Participants will learn a simple 2-step validation and emotion coaching approach that can be used in everyday moments to help children feel understood while still supporting boundaries and problem-solving. We will also explore how different emotions have different needs, for example, anxiety often needs reassurance paired with gradual exposure. This practical presentation is designed to provide attendees with immediately usable strategies to support emotional development and regulation in children and teens. Dr. Michelle Fardella & Dr. Stephanie Lavoie are licensed clinical psychologists in Ontario. They have experience working in community mental health, private practice, hospital, and school settings. They are published researchers, active clinicians providing assessments and therapies, and provide training for graduate students. They founded WonderTree Child, Adolescent, and Family practice in 2023, a multidisciplinary clinic in Orangeville and virtually across the province and beyond.
