Parent Advocacy: More Than Fundraising
Being a parent advocate for Catholic education is about so much more than fundraising, volunteering, or supporting school events. While these contributions are important, parent advocacy means using our voice to support our children, our schools and the future of Catholic education.
As parents, we are our children’s first and most important advocates. We have a responsibility to stay informed, ask questions, participate in our school communities and speak up when decisions affect our children’s education and well-being.
But Catholic parent advocacy goes beyond advocating for our own children.
We are called to advocate for one another. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and experience a Catholic education rooted in faith, dignity, inclusion, service and the common good. Sometimes, being an advocate means speaking up for a child, family or community whose voice may not otherwise be heard.
This is where OAPCE—the Ontario Association of Parents in Catholic Education—plays an important role. OAPCE provides a provincial voice for Catholic parents, bringing together parents from across Ontario to share perspectives, raise concerns, promote Catholic education and advocate on issues that affect Catholic schools and families.
Through OAPCE, parents have an opportunity to move beyond the individual school and recognize that our collective voice can help strengthen Catholic education across the province. It is about ensuring that the parent perspective is part of important conversations and that the voices of Catholic families are heard.
Parent advocacy is not about confrontation—it is about engagement, informed dialogue and partnership. It means working with our schools, boards, trustees and provincial partners while remaining committed to the mission and values of Catholic education.

Fundraising can help provide resources for a school, but advocacy helps protect and strengthen the Catholic education system itself.
As Catholic parents, let us not only ask, “What can I do for my child?” but also:
“What can I do for every child?”
That is the heart of parent advocacy—and it is why organizations like OAPCE matter. When parents come together, our individual voices become a collective voice for Catholic education.
